Day 16 – The Pig Man of Cannock Chase
Deep within the ancient woodlands of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire lurks one of Britain’s most disturbing modern cryptid legends – the mysterious Pig Man.
Cannock Chase has long been associated with strange phenomena. From reports of the Black-Eyed Child and phantom big cats to UFO sightings and ghostly apparitions, the area has earned a reputation as one of Britain’s paranormal hotspots. Yet among all its mysteries, few are as unsettling as the Pig Man.
Witnesses describe a towering figure, standing around seven feet tall, with the muscular body of a man but the head of a wild boar complete with a snout and prominent tusks. Many encounters follow a similar pattern. Walkers first hear loud grunting or piercing squeals echoing through the trees before glimpsing the creature emerging from dense undergrowth. Some claim it charges towards them before disappearing back into the forest almost as quickly as it appeared.
Adding to the mystery is an eerie piece of local folklore that suggests the creature sometimes whispers a chilling rhyme:
“From the trees, the Pig Man comes…”
Whether anyone has genuinely heard these words remains impossible to verify, but the rhyme has become firmly embedded in the legend.
Where did the legend begin?
The most common origin story dates back to the Second World War. During the 1940s, Cannock Chase was home to military camps and training facilities. Over the years, rumours emerged that secret government experiments involving human and animal DNA had taken place somewhere within the Chase. According to the legend, one of these experiments escaped into the surrounding woodland.
There is no historical evidence whatsoever that such experiments ever occurred, and historians generally regard this as classic urban folklore that grew around the area’s wartime history.
The Pig Man legend received a fresh wave of attention during the early 2000s when local paranormal investigator Lee Brickley began collecting reports from members of the public. One of the best-known accounts came from a group of teenagers camping near Castle Ring, who claimed they were awakened by heavy grunting outside their tent before briefly seeing a huge pig-headed figure disappearing into the darkness.
Could there be a simpler explanation?
Several possibilities have been suggested over the years:
Escaped or feral wild boar, which can appear surprisingly large and intimidating in poor light.
Mistaken identity, where shadows, dense woodland and heightened expectation combine to create frightening misperceptions.
Wartime rumours and military activity may have fuelled stories designed to discourage people from entering restricted areas.
Military training exercises, survivalists or airsoft players moving through woodland at night could easily create strange silhouettes and unexplained noises.
Despite decades of sightings and stories, there has never been any physical evidence to support the existence of the Pig Man. No verified photographs, footprints, DNA, or independently confirmed encounters have ever been produced.
Richard’s Verdict
⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5)
The Pig Man is one of Britain’s best modern cryptid legends and perfectly demonstrates how folklore can evolve around real places with mysterious reputations. Cannock Chase has a genuinely eerie atmosphere, especially after dark, and it’s easy to see how fear, expectation and unusual sounds could give rise to extraordinary stories. While I love the legend, the lack of credible evidence means I believe the Pig Man is almost certainly a product of folklore, rumour and misidentification rather than an undiscovered creature.
What do you think?
Could something unknown really be stalking the forests of Cannock Chase, or is the Pig Man simply one of Britain’s greatest modern campfire stories?
