The Calvine UFO Incident
The Calvine UFO: Britain’s Most Mysterious Photograph?
On the evening of 4 August 1990, two hikers were walking near the tiny hamlet of Calvine, just south of Pitlochry in Perthshire, Scotland, when they claimed to witness something extraordinary.

According to their account, a huge diamond-shaped object silently hovered in the sky above the landscape. It remained almost motionless for several minutes before a RAF Harrier jet appeared, circling the mysterious craft as though investigating it.
Believing they were witnessing something incredible, one of the hikers photographed the object six times.
Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the object accelerated vertically and disappeared from sight.
The two men submitted their photographs to the Daily Record newspaper. Instead of publishing the story, the newspaper passed the photographs and negatives to the Ministry of Defence.

Then…
The story vanished.
For over thirty years, the photographs were believed to have disappeared. The identities of the witnesses have never been confirmed publicly, and the incident became one of Britain’s greatest UFO mysteries.
In 2022, researcher David Clarke located one surviving print that had been retained by a former RAF press officer. The image finally entered the public domain, reigniting debate around what many describe as the clearest UFO photograph ever taken.
The Evidence
✔ Two independent eyewitnesses.
✔ Six photographs were reportedly taken.
✔ A military aircraft appears in the photograph.
✔ The Ministry of Defence examined the original negatives.
✔ The MoD confirmed that the photographs were analysed, although officials later stated they were considered to have no defence significance.
Possible Explanations
Over the years several theories have emerged:
- A secret American experimental aircraft.
- A classified British military project.
- An elaborate photographic hoax.
- An unusual atmospheric illusion.
- A genuinely unidentified aerial phenomenon.

The above picture is a mirrored reflection of a rock in a dead calm pool of water, whilst this has been postulated as a possible explanation for being part of a hoaxed photograph, and I can sort of see why. However, looking at the real image I cant see this being the case. Although it would be interesting to have a go at recreating the image.
Despite decades of investigation, no explanation has achieved universal acceptance. The original negatives have never been publicly produced, and the witnesses have remained anonymous, leaving many questions unanswered.
Nick Pope and the Aurora Theory
One of the people most closely associated with the Calvine Incident is Nick Pope, who worked for the Ministry of Defence’s UFO desk between 1991 and 1994. Although he was not involved in the original 1990 investigation, he inherited the case files and has described the Calvine photographs as “the most spectacular UFO photo ever sent to the Ministry of Defence.”

Pope has said that a large, poster-sized copy of the best photograph hung on the wall of his MoD office for several years. According to him, defence intelligence analysts concluded that the photographs showed a genuine, large, structured object at some distance from the camera, and they found no evidence that the images had been manipulated. However, they were unable to identify exactly what had been photographed.
One explanation discussed within the Ministry of Defence was that the object might have been the alleged “Aurora” aircraft—a rumoured, highly classified American hypersonic reconnaissance aircraft that has never been officially acknowledged to exist. Pope has suggested that the timing is intriguing, as the sighting occurred just two days after Iraq invaded Kuwait, when advanced American military technology may have been preparing for deployment to the Gulf region. If Aurora—or another secret prototype aircraft—did exist, its existence could explain why even officials with high security clearances were unable to identify it.
However, there is no publicly available evidence confirming that Aurora ever existed, and no proof linking the Calvine object to any classified aircraft. The Aurora explanation therefore remains one of several competing theories rather than an established fact.
Richard’s Verdict
Richard’s Verdict
The Calvine Incident is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling UFO cases ever reported in the United Kingdom, not because it proves of extraterrestrial visitors, but because of the quality of the evidence surrounding it.
The involvement of the Ministry of Defence, the reported presence of an RAF Harrier, the disappearance of the original negatives, and the decades of official secrecy have ensured that this case continues to attract serious attention. The fact that former MoD UFO investigator Nick Pope has described it as “the most spectacular UFO photograph ever sent to the Ministry of Defence” only adds to its significance.
Personally, I believe the Calvine photographs are genuine. Whether they captured an advanced classified aircraft, an experimental platform operated by an allied nation, perhaps even the rumoured Aurora reconnaissance aircraft, or something that remains genuinely unexplained is impossible to say with certainty.
Without the original negatives or public testimony from the witnesses themselves, no definitive conclusion can be reached. Until new evidence comes to light, the Calvine Incident remains one of Britain’s greatest unsolved UFO mysteries and a fascinating reminder that, even today, there are still events that challenge our understanding.
What do you think?
Was Calvine evidence of a secret military aircraft, an elaborate hoax, or something that still defies explanation?
