Paranormal 365 – Day 22
The Alderney UFO Encounter (2007)
On the afternoon of 23 April 2007, one of the most intriguing UFO sightings in modern British aviation took place over the English Channel.

Captain Ray Bowyer, an experienced pilot flying a Blue Islands Trislander from Southampton to Alderney, was preparing to descend when air traffic control asked if he could identify an unusual object that had been reported in the area.

Trislander Airplane
What he saw left him stunned.
Ahead of his aircraft appeared a brilliant yellow object with what he described as a thin green band running through it. The object looked enormous—far larger than any conventional aircraft—and seemed to have a cigar-shaped appearance. Bowyer later estimated it could have been as much as a mile wide, although he acknowledged judging size and distance in clear skies can be extremely difficult.

Moments later, he noticed a second object nearby.
The two objects appeared stationary before one suddenly moved away at tremendous speed. Bowyer watched them for several minutes before they eventually disappeared.
Importantly, he wasn’t the only witness.
The crew of another commercial aircraft, flying from Jersey, also reported seeing unusual lights in approximately the same area. Air traffic controllers on Jersey had tracked the aircraft involved and attempted to establish what the crews were observing.
Although radar evidence has been debated, there was enough interest for the UK’s Ministry of Defence and the Civil Aviation Authority to examine the reports.
Several explanations have been suggested over the years.
Some researchers believe the pilots were observing an unusual atmospheric phenomenon caused by temperature inversions, creating distorted images of distant objects far beyond the horizon. Others have proposed rare mirages, reflections, or unusual cloud formations.
However, critics argue these explanations struggle to account for the reported movement, colour, shape and the fact that multiple experienced observers described remarkably similar objects.
Nearly two decades later, the Alderney incident remains one of Britain’s most credible modern UFO encounters—not because it proves extraterrestrial visitors, but because it involved trained aviation professionals reporting something they simply could not identify.
Evidence Rating

Captain Ray Bowyers
Witness Credibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (9/10)
Two highly experienced commercial airline pilots independently reported seeing the object, making this one of the strongest aspects of the case.
Number of Witnesses: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (8/10)
Multiple witnesses, including the crew of another aircraft and air traffic controllers who were aware of the incident.
Physical Evidence: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (3/10)
No photographs, recovered material or conclusive radar evidence has ever been produced publicly.
Official Interest: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆☆☆ (7/10)
The sighting attracted attention from aviation authorities and the Ministry of Defence because of the calibre of the witnesses.
Explanation Status: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆☆☆ (7/10)
Atmospheric mirage theories remain plausible but do not satisfy everyone. No explanation has been universally accepted.
⭐ Overall Evidence Score
34/50 ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Evidence Rating: 6.8/10
Richard’s Verdict
“This is one of the UK’s most credible modern UFO reports. When experienced airline pilots describe something they cannot identify, it’s worth paying attention. However, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and despite the excellent witness testimony, we’re still missing the hard physical evidence needed to conclude this was anything truly extraordinary.
My view? Captain Ray Bowyer undoubtedly saw something unusual. Whether that was a rare atmospheric phenomenon or something genuinely unexplained remains an open question. Until stronger evidence comes to light, I think this case deserves to stay firmly in the ‘Unexplained’ category.”
Richard’s Verdict:
🟡 Unexplained
So what do you think?
Was this a rare atmospheric illusion that fooled experienced pilots… or did Captain Bowyer witness something genuinely unexplained?
